On May 29, 2025, a powerful EF2 tornado struck Henry County, Georgia, causing significant damage and critically injuring two residents.

Among them was 18-year-old Malachi Chaney, son of actor Tray Chaney, known for his role as Malik “Poot” Carr on HBO’s The Wire. Malachi was thrown approximately 300 feet into nearby woods when the tornado destroyed their home in Locust Grove. He sustained multiple injuries, including broken ribs and facial fractures, and was initially placed in the intensive care unit at Grady Memorial Hospital. After six days in the ICU, Malachi’s condition stabilized, and he was moved to a regular hospital room. He celebrated his 19th birthday in the ICU and has since taken his first steps during recovery.

Tray Chaney also suffered a head injury during the storm but was treated and released from the hospital. The tornado, which developed rapidly without advance warning, damaged 13 structures in the Laurel Creek subdivision and crossed Interstate 75 before dissipating.

In the aftermath, the community has rallied around the Chaney family. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with their recovery efforts.
