🧅 How to Grow Onions at Home – Step-by-Step Guide

Growing onions at home is easy, budget-friendly, and perfect even for small spaces. Follow these steps:

1. Choose a Sprouted Onion
Use a store-bought onion that has started to sprout, or cut the top inch of an onion with green shoots.

2. Prepare the Container
Use a pot or container with drainage holes. Fill it with well-draining soil, ideally mixed with compost.

3. Plant the Onion
Place the onion sprout or top in the soil with the green part facing up. Cover it halfway with soil, leaving the top exposed.

4. Place in Sunlight
Set the container in a sunny location like your balcony, porch, or windowsill. Onions need 6–7 hours of sunlight daily.

5. Water Regularly
Water lightly every 2–3 days, enough to keep the soil moist, not soaked.

6. Trim the Green Shoots (Optional)
After 1–2 weeks, green leaves will grow. You can harvest and use them like green onions.

7. Harvest the Bulb
Let the onion grow for 3–4 months. When the leaves turn yellow and fall over, gently pull the onion from the soil.

8. Cure and Store
Let the onion dry in a cool, shaded place for 1–2 weeks before storing.
