🌙 Why Do We Forget 90% of Our Dreams?
Most people forget their dreams within minutes of waking up. Here’s why:
- Brain Chemistry Shift – During sleep, certain chemicals (like norepinephrine) that help form memories are at very low levels. When you wake up, memory “recording” doesn’t work as well.
- Dreams Happen in REM Sleep – This stage is fragile, and if you wake up suddenly, the dream fades before it can be stored.
- The Brain Filters “Unimportant” Info – Your brain treats dreams as less important than real-life experiences, so it doesn’t save them.
- Distraction on Waking – Checking your phone or jumping out of bed quickly wipes out fragile dream memories.
- Dreams Are Often Bizarre – Because they don’t always connect to reality, the brain struggles to “file” them in long-term memory.
