
🚨 Large Tornado and Hailstorm Strike Akron, Colorado – May 23, 2025
Akron, CO – A powerful tornado outbreak accompanied by large hail slammed into northeastern Colorado on the evening of May 23, 2025, with the town of Akron being one of the hardest hit.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), multiple tornadoes were confirmed in the region, including:
🌀 Tornado Reports
- EF1 Tornado southeast of Willard to southeast of Messex — tracked 10.68 miles.
- EF2 Tornado from southeast of Messex to just north of Akron — 8.72 miles long and up to 400 yards wide. This tornado caused structural damage and downed power lines.
- EFU Tornado southeast of Akron — a brief touchdown with no reported damage.
Eyewitnesses and storm chasers reported up to five tornadoes across a 35-mile stretch, with visible funnels forming near Merino, Atwood, and Akron.

Severe thunderstorms brought tennis-ball-sized hail (up to 2.5 inches in diameter) to several areas, including:
- Sterling
- Merino
- Surrounding towns in Logan and Washington Counties
The hail caused significant damage to vehicles, roofs, and crops in rural areas.
